O’Donoghue’s
Hoboken’s Pot O’ Gold
By Melissa Meisel
If you’re down in the city or Hoboken on St.
Patrick’s Day, an essential stop in your travels is to
O’Donoghue’s on First Street. According to owner Ken
Kosco, “We are located in the heart of Irish Row in
Hoboken, so St. Patrick’s Day is always a huge event for
us. People from all over flock to First Street after
the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.”
O’Donoghue’s has meant something for everyone. It’s
actually two bars in one; and with a capacity of 350
people, they are one of the biggest clubs in Hoboken.
The main room houses the stage area - which features New
Jersey’s hottest bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
nights, K-Rock DJ Covino from Solid State drops records
every Thursday night. But, if you’re in the mood to
just kick back, relax, and shoot some pool, they have a
lounge area in their back room.
Tuesday’s drink specials include $2.50 Michelob Lights,
Wednesdays are $3 Bud bottles. They also have a
full-menu of American eats like burgers, fries, and
chicken sandwiches…foods complimentary to their hearty
drinks.
Musicians take note: On Sundays, O’Donoghue’s has
Hoboken’s best open mic night, hosted by Jester. The
best open mic performers then get selected for paying
gigs on Mondays and Tuesdays. Kosco is still trying to
convince Steppin Out’s own Dan Lorenzo to come down one
night and show off a little. This year St. Patrick’s
Day falls on a Monday, so they will feature live music
by Jordan.
What
makes O’Donoghue’s different from other bars in the area
is its down-home vibe in an urban setting. Kosco
explains, “Everyone feels at home at O’Donoghue’s
whether it is their first time or their thousandth time
through the door. I think that’s a tribute to our
staff.”
O’Donoghue’s first opened its doors in 1987, but Kosco
bought it in December 2000. He explains, “This was my
old college hangout…I’ve always loved this bar!” Sounds
like Kosco has found his very own pot o’ gold at the end
of the rainbow.
O’Donoghue’s is located at 205 First St. in Hoboken.
